Believarexic
J.J. Johnson
Believarexic, by J.J. Johnson, is a heart-throbbing story about a girl named Jennifer. Jennifer has bulimia and forces her parents to take her to a disorder hospital thinking that this will help her kill the “monster” inside of her. But once she starts living there, she realizes just how much she depends onto her parents. After a rocky few days, she starts to find friends here and there who are there to help her through the new eating rituals. Everything seemed to look up, that was until her friends started to leave the building. Realizing that she was ignorant about her surroundings, she not only learns more about her friend’s struggle with eating disorders, but also about how her bulimia started in the first place. When she sees her friends start to give up on recovery and leave without getting better, Jennifer is depressed but still works the program. When she finally meets her new friend, Sophie, she realizes that disorders come in all shapes and forms and that true friendship can be showed in the simplest ways. Follow Jennifer’s heartwarming journey where she learns more about her eating disorder as well as learning to believe in her own power and capabilities as well as others.
Believarexic is an heartwarming, emotional story about a girl and her eating disorder. Although this book is long and can be quite tedious to read at times, trust me, by the end of the book you would have sobbed, laughed, and cried tears of joy. When I first started reading Believarexic I was a bit confused about the story line, but the more I read into the book, the more alive and enveloped I felt into the story. J.J. Johnson, the author, has built up the characters and emotion so well that you feel like you need to shield Jennifer from all the bad things happening around her. I personally loved this book and once I started get farther into the book, I dreaded putting it down. I cried tears of sadness as well as tears of joy. Believarexic, truly is a story that shows emotion, journey, and belief in one’s self and others.
