Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Jeff Kinney

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney, is funny, weird, and is perfect for beginner readers. Although I don’t think the stories are heart-wrenching, or emotional, they’re relatable, and great to train readers towards reading. When Greg Heffley, the main character, finds himself in his first year of middle-school. The place where weaklings, and newbies share the hallways with taller, and meaner kids. But Greg is happy to have Rowley, his sidekick and friend. But when Rowley starts to become popular, Greg tries to use this to advantage, kicking off a change of events that test their friendship in hilarious fashions.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is hilarious, funny, and stupid in a good and bad way. Yes, the stories have no theme, or true meaning, but Diary of a Wimpy Kid is perfect for beginner readers. It will teach kids how to read longer books. It captivates kids with its relatable voice and point-of-view. Would I suggest this for group readings, or character development lessons? No. Would I say the stories are deep? No. But these stories are entertaining and great for a nice laugh, and an authentic voice. Yes, people will complain about the characters not having any symbolism, and although I believe most books do, and should have a theme, can’t a book just be written to make others laugh?
