Sea Witch

Sea Witch

Sarah Henning

Sea Witch, by Sarah Henning is a twist on the story of the Little Mermaid and a little more. Everyone knows what happens in the end. A mermaid, a prince, a true love’s kiss. But before that, there were three friends. One feared, one royal, and one already dead. Ever since Evie’s best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch. That is until one day a girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore. And although the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyes—and hearts—of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after. But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince’s heart. She harnesses the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.

Sea Witch is truthfully one of the best books I’ve ever read. The characters are exciting and layered of so many different characteristics. From the first word, I was instantly hooked onto the story. My one comment would be that the writing of the story can drag on a bit. Especially in the middle of the story. It really is a slow story. It's not a thrill and romance kind of book, it’s a very gentle wander through history. The occasional third person chapters also slow down the book. I think Sea Witch will work really well for the right sort of reader, but I think the majority of readers will pick this up expecting something it doesn't deliver. But none the less, this story was amazing and exciting. I really recommend reading this book to the very end. The last 50 pages were exciting and suspenseful as is really capable of turning around to punch you in the face. This was one of the few books that made me stop breathing at the very end. This was an amazing story, and even if the story seems to drag, I still would recommend reading to the very end.
